The two archdeaconries
It is usual for a diocese to be split into smaller, more manageable areas or archdeaconries. In the Peterborough Diocese there are two archdeaconries, Oakham and Northampton.

The Archdeaconry of Oakham covers the northern half of the diocese - Rutland, the churches in Peterborough north of the River Nene, and part of Northamptonshire.

The Archdeaconry of Northampton covers the southern half of the diocese - the southern part of the county of Northamptonshire.

The work of the Archdeacons
Archdeacons assist the bishop in the pastoral care of clergy and they assist parishes with the legal and practical matters they face. The archdeacons work closely with the rural deans and lay chairs of deaneries to equip the local church for its mission. They admit churchwardens to office, induct priests who the bishop has instituted to a benefice, and present to the bishop for ordination those who have been called and trained.

Articles of enquiry
Churchwardens are asked annually to complete the Archdeacons' Articles of Enquiry to provide information about the work of each church.

Archdeacon's charge
An Archdeacon's Charge is presented to churchwardens when they are admitted to office or on the occasion of an Archdeacon's Visitation to a deanery. A copy of the Charges for Northampton and Oakham Archdeaconries is on the Downloads page of this website.

Advice to churchwardens
Information and advice for churchwardens is available from the Peterborough Diocesan Registry website.
