Where we are

The Diocese of Peterborough covers about 1200 square miles, including the whole of Northamptonshire, Rutland, and the Soke of Peterborough (the part of Peterborough north of the River Nene).

This area is home to some 800,000 people and facing considerable population growth in the future. We are linked to Bungoma Diocese in Kenya.

Who we are

Within the Diocese there are approximately:

22,200 people (of all ages) attending 354 parish churches in the diocese each week (2004 figures).
175 parish clergy, both stipendiary and non stipendiary (unpaid), including curates.
126 Readers.
82 Pastoral Assistants.
24 Parish Evangelists.
17 licensed lay workers or Church Army officers.
170 clergy (many retired) with Permission to Officiate.
22 Chaplains of institutions such as schools, prisons, hospitals etc.
11 full time officers / advisers.
17 administrative and support staff.
104 Church Schools.


The bigger picture

The Peterborough Diocese is one of 44 dioceses in the Church of England.

Average weekly attendance has grown by 1% in this diocese over the past two years, exactly matching the national trend.

The average weekly attendance in all Church of England churches is 1.186m.
The average monthly Church of England attendance is 1.7m.

Almost half the population attends a Christian service over the Christmas period.

80% of the population go into a place of worship (not only Christian or Anglican) each year; 60% believe that a place of worship makes their neighbourhood a better place to live.
