Urban Support Officer: Revd Roger Woods

Bouverie Court, 6 The Lakes, Bedford Road, Northampton NN4 7YD

01604 887053 or 01604 599902 (home)

My role is to encourage, support and explore with urban and outer estate parishes new mission and discipleship opportunities using Growth Action Plans and other tools, creative use of buildings, fresh expressions and ways of leading into growth.   One example that has been recently introduced into this Diocese is Jesus-Shaped People (JSP) – a whole church discipleship adventure (

I organise gatherings for urban and outer estate ministers (ordained and lay) from time to time to encourage and equip us for the sometimes demanding ministry in such places.  Our most recent was the Diocesan Urban Day in September 2017 where our guest speaker was Reverend Damian Feeney, Catholic Missioner and Vicar of Ettingshall in Wolverhampton (Diocese of Lichfield).  The slides from his powerpoint presentation can be found here.

I engage with other local and national initiatives and networks, who are working in urban contexts (eg National Estate Churches Network (NECN) and the CURBS (Children in Urban Situations) project, and also those with matters of social justice and social responsibility (eg the Church Urban Fund and the Church of England Social Responsibility Network).

Further helpful links on a variety of subjects can be found on the Mission in Society pages of the Diocesan website.

I am also available to advise churches on grant and funding applications, which includes being the Diocesan Link Officer for the Church Urban Fund.  (However as of January 2018 the usual potential funds from CUF are currently closed).

I am also half-time Anglican Vicar of Church on the Heath, an Anglican/Baptist LEP serving the Kings Heath estate on the North West of Northampton.
