USING YOUR GIVING FOR LIFE RESOURCES Top

Bishop Donald has written to parish clergy with resources they can use to help each church with the financial challenges they face. The Giving for Life pack they have received includes a clergy guide, a PCC members’ discussion booklet and a leaflet for congregation members. The idea is to use these resources with PCCs and congregations, and to adopt four key pieces of good practice. These are:

To offer regular teaching about giving.
To carry out an annual review of giving.
To make a direct link between giving and the parish’s mission.
To thank givers.

In his letter Bishop Donald says: “As a nation, a diocese, parish or individual we all face challenging times financially, but God’s promise is still the same, that if we trust in him he will provide all that we need.”

The Giving for Life campaign seeks to transform the way we think about giving, so that we become habitually generous disciples. It aims to nurture a holistic view of money and lifestyle so that we expect our giving to have an effect on the way we live. You can find more information and some of the resource papers at: www.peterborough-diocese.org.uk/adminandresources/stewardship.htm or contact Paul Adams, Stewardship and Funding Officer on 01604 887071, paul.adams@peterborough-diocese.org.uk.

MISSION Top

These Back to Church Sunday (B2CS) tips can be applied to any outreach event or service:

1 Find a champion
An individual or small group who get the vision and run the event. The vicar is too busy to be the champion! The champion keeps the event on the agenda, organises a team, get others excited and seeks publicity.

2 Invitations

How not to do it …
Leave the invitations at the back of church
Just print the invitation in the parish magazine
Stick the invitations through people’s letterboxes

How to get it right…
Encourage people to participate!
Challenge people, “who are you going to invite?”
Knock on the door…
Recruit good “inviters” and set them to work
Use the official invitations, they look good
Poor invitation technique = a poor event

3 Momentum

Get everyone involved….
Preach on B2CS, or whatever your event is, write about it in the church magazine, put up posters, inform the local press and radio, show the DVD, wear the T-shirt!

Get God involved…..
Prayer night…. Prayer meeting… Prayer breakfast… Sunday intercessions… House group meetings.
Good housekeeping…
Create a “welcoming” welcome team for the day… tidy up… serve really good refreshments.

4 The service itself

Use an easy to follow service book
Choose hymns that are well known
Have a visitor friendly sermon
What happens at the end of the service?

Now is the time to start planning Alternative Halloween events, such as Halloween Heroes. Contact Rona for specific ideas. Please consider using the last weekend in October to raise money for the Children’s Society via an Alternative Halloween happening. CHURCH BUILDINGS & CHURCHYARDS Top

Lightning protection - annual testing advised
How frequently lightning protection systems should be tested is a common question and it has to be admitted that the guidance available to parishes from various bodies has, at times, been confusing and sometimes contradictory.

Best practice, as laid down by British Standards (BS6651) and now superceded by British and European Standards (BSEN62305), clearly states that lightning protection engineers should test protection systems on an annual basis. This ensures that all connections are regularly checked for electrical continuity. If a joint should become corroded, this will encourage power to “side flash” to any metal within or on a structure, with the attendant risk of damage and fire.

It is true that most church lightning protection systems are simple and not liable to any significant changes, and this has undoubtedly led to the advice, given by English Heritage and insurance companies in the past, that a test regime of longer intervals than a year may be sufficient. However, it is also true that most church protection systems are old and, by modern standards, out of date, so it can be argued that it is more important to inspect regularly.

Moreover, recent contact with lightning protection specialists has highlighted the fact that the test certificate of compliance which is issued when the test is completed successfully, is valid for a 12 month period only, much like an MOT certificate. To ensure continuous cover, therefore, an annual test is required. Paul Middleton, DAC Secretary

With thanks to Chris Barsby of Barsby Lightning Protection for bringing this to our attention.

Finding the right contractor for church work
When a new project comes up in a church and skilled professional help is required, it is important to find the right contractor for the job. Often the first port of call should be the church architect, who has a wide range of experience working with contractors in all fields of church conservation.

Talking to nearby parishes and visiting the completed projects, where recent work has taken place, is another way in which it is possible to gain an insight to the quality of workmanship which might be available in the area. Many PCCs are aware of local firms who are keen to support the church and this is encouraged where those firms have experience in conservation work relevant to church buildings.

A relatively new scheme, the Heritage CSCS (Construction Skills Certificate Scheme) Card, is now running which accredits conservation and construction skills and this scheme has over 1.5 million people registered with it. Cardholders will be pleased to present the registration card as evidence of their skills, qualifications and health and safety awareness. Next time the PCC is seeking quotations for work, ask if contractor has the CSCS Card and be assured of a level of competence and expertise.

Who’s buried in your church or churchyard?
The Northamptonshire Family History Society has, for many years, been recording the inscriptions in churches and churchyards in the county, and then publishing them as inexpensive booklets. So far, about 130 parishes have been covered, ranging alphabetically from Abington to Yelvertoft. The full list is available at www.northants-fhs.org

Some churches already have a supply of booklets for reference and for sale. Others may have sold out of their original stock or not realize that a booklet has been published for their church. Copies can be ordered from: Mary Ginns, NFHS, 26 Stella Avenue, Tollerton, Notts, NG12 4EX. Please contact her, by phone or email, should you wish to order more than 4 copies: Tel: 0115 9373199. Email: msginns@aol.com.

VAT on Repairs - please write to your MP
Since 2001 all places of worship have been able to claim back the VAT on repairs to their buildings. This scheme expires in March 2011, just after VAT goes up to 20% in January 2011. The online petition campaigning for the continuation of the scheme can no longer be used as the new government is reviewing the role of e-petitions. In view of this, it is even more imperative that people write to their local MP requesting that the scheme be continued.

Church maintenance: Things to do
July
Look at timber windows, doors, fascias and bargeboards. Check for cracked and rotten wood. Redecoration may be required.
Clear away any plant growth from around the base of the walls and particularly from drainage channels.
Have the lightning conductor serviced and tested.
If your building has a steeple, consider having it inspected by a steeplejack once every five years.

August: Review June/July tasks to pick up any that have not been done. Take a break!

September
If your roof space has safe access and is boarded, check for evidence of leaks or damage to the roof covering during heavy rains.
Clear away any plant growth from around the base of the walls and particularly from drainage channels.
Make sure that water tanks and exposed water and heating pipes are protected from frost. Any leaks should be repaired.
Make sure that any air bricks or underfloor ventilators are free from obstruction and cleaned, if necessary.

SAFEGUARDING Top

ISA and CRB Vetting and Barring scheme under review
Clergy and Child Protection Co-ordinators will have received an email update from Garry Johnson, Safeguarding Officer, with the news that the new coalition Government is to “review the vetting and barring regime and scale it back to common sense levels”. The planned ISA registration scheme has been halted and will not now launch in July 2010. Therefore current advice regarding CRB checks is:

1. Although the ISA registration phase of the Vetting and Barring scheme has been halted, the new application forms will still be launched on 26 July 2010. The CRB will ignore those parts of the new application form which relate to ISA registration requirements.

2.    You can complete these new forms and send them to the Diocesan Office. You can use the new application form to apply for Enhanced CRB checks. What you cannot do is apply for ISA registration.

3. If you do not want a CRB check but simply wanted to apply for ISA registration, please do not  send in the application form.

For more information contact your parish Clergy or Child Protection Co-ordinator, or Garry Johnson, Safeguarding Officer, tel: 01733 887041, email: garry.johnson@peterborough-diocese. org.uk
