Biography of the Right Reverend Ian Cundy
The Rt Revd
Ian Cundy was appointed Bishop of Peterborough in 1996.
He was born in
April 1945 and attended
Monkton Combe School near Bath. Then he studied at Trinity College, Cambridge,
before training for the ministry at Tyndale Hall, Bristol
(now part of Trinity College).
He was ordained deacon
in 1969 and priest in 1970, and was Curate of Christ Church, New Malden. From 1973-1977 he lectured in
Church History and Doctrine at Oak Hill Theological College in
London.
Between 1978 and 1983
he was the Team Rector of Mortlake with East Sheen in south west
London and in 1978, the then Bishop of Southwark asked him also
to be his Examining Chaplain.
In 1983 he was appointed
as the Warden of Cranmer Hall at St John's College, Durham, where
he stayed for nine years. In 1992 he was appointed as the Bishop
of Lewes. He became Bishop of Peterborough in
1996.
He is involved with
many organisations both within and outside of the church and in
1998 became Chairman of the Council for Christian Unity. He was
a member of the Anglican Old Catholic International Conference
between 1980 and 1990 and the Faith and Order Advisory Group between
1981 and 1996. He was a member of the Board of Ministry
between 1991 and 1992 and a member of the Court of the University
of Sussex between 1992 and 1996.
He is the President
of St John's College Durham and was governor of Monkton Combe
School between 1986 and 1998, Eastbourne College between 1993
and 1996 and Lancing College between 1994 and 1998. In 1997 he
became a governor of what is now the University of Northampton. He is also
a trustee of Oakham School and Uppingham School.
Bishop Ian is married to Jo and they have three grown up children. He lists amongst his
recreations music, walking and photography. |
