The role of Bishops
A diocesan bishop oversees the mission, ministry and administration of a diocese. A suffragan bishop exercises a bishop's ministry under the authority of the diocesan bishop.
Bishops have a role at a local, national and international level.
In parishes the bishops confirm new church members, preach at special services, licence clergy and take part in major festivals and events. Within the diocese, they have oversight of all clergy, lay ministers and workers as well as the diocesan budget and portfolio of assets. They support the ministry of clergy in the diocese and provide pastoral care to them. Their work is shared with other senior staff, including the Archdeacons and the Diocesan Secretary.
Diocesan bishops are members of the Church of England's General Synod and often serve on national and international church boards and councils.
There are 113 bishops in the Church of England, 44 of whom are diocesan bishops and 69 suffragan and assistant bishops. The Bishop of Peterborough is one of the 26 diocesan bishops who currently sit in the House of Lords.
The role of Dean of the Cathedral
The Dean is the senior ordained minister of the Cathedral and is responsible for providing spiritual and administrative direction. The Dean is a member of the Bishop's senior staff providing insights and support to activity in the diocese.
