The Archdeacon of Oakham
The Venerable Gordon Steele is the Archdeacon of Oakham. The Archdeaconry of Oakham covers the northern part of the diocese, including Corby, Higham, Kettering, Oundle, Peterborough and Rutland deaneries. Archdeacon Gordon has spiritual oversight of financial matters across the diocese and is also currently Chair of the House of Clergy of the Diocesan Synod.
Archdeacon Gordon was Vicar of St John’s in Peterborough city centre from 2001-2012. Here he oversaw a £280,000 development project and collaborated with the multi-million pound regeneration of Peterborough city centre, including the setting up of a Community Interest Company, so that the church could be integrated into the public realm and used more as a community resource. He was Rural Dean of Peterborough from 2004 to 2010. Prior to his time in Peterborough, Gordon was Vicar of St Alban the Martyr in Northampton(1994-2001). He served his curacy at St John’s, Greenhill (1984-1988) and was Team Vicar of St Andrew’s Uxbridge (1988-1994), both in the London Diocese. Before his ordination he worked with USPG [the United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel] as Missionary Treasurer of the Diocese of South-West Tanganyika.
He is married to Maria, a biologist, and they have two teenage children.
