Kenyan Link makes a big difference

Article from Cross Keys magazine, Spring 2006

New churches planted, growing congregations, improved infrastructure and the great sense of a church strengthened. These are some of the things identified by Bishop Eliud as evidence of the difference made, at least in part, by the link between Peterborough and Bungoma dioceses.

This winter has seen exchange visits in both directions. Revds Clive Evans and David Wiseman travelled to Bungoma during December and Bishop Eliud, with a party of five headteachers, visited us here during February.

“Over here we probably have little idea how much the link means to the people of Bungoma Diocese”, said Clive Evans, “we have even less idea of the difference their prayers are making on our behalf.”

Clive and David visited over 50 churches, schools and clinics and were impressed with the significant (and in some cases outstanding) progress being made.

A clinic is being constructed at Khulwanda, deep in the sugar cane belt. Already it is making a difference to people’s well being. It needs to. Only two years ago a gifted 18 year old student at the secondary school fell ill with diarrhoea and quickly died. This kind of tragedy can be averted now, thanks to the work of the clinic.

At Chebukutumi, linked with the Crick benefice, Clive opened a brand new ‘suite’ of latrines, decked out in the primary school colours of yellow and blue. Smart and also safe, in a place where hygiene matters!

St Mary’s Church at Malakisi Township is named after Revd Mary Garbutt, who visited this small mud church during the curates’ visit in 2003. Now there is a brand new brick church of much greater proportions. It’s needed, as the congregation just keeps on growing. Bishop Eliud consecrated the new building as the last act of David and Clive’s visit.

Our Guild of Centurions has agreed to extend the Bungoma Microfinance Project because they are so impressed with the progress being made. The Project is making a real impact on the lives of many struggling individuals by enabling them to support themselves, with a little investment.
