Living the gospel in Bungoma

Article from Cross Keys magazine, Winter 2007

“No amount of talking to others, or reading, can prepare you for the reality,” said Melvyn Hunter from Whitefriars church, Rushden, speaking about his recent trip to Bungoma. “It was great to be placed with ordinary people and to be able to live with them. All my hosts were extremely generous. They give out of the little they had and accepted me literally as a brother.”

Melvyn was one of a group of 12 people from the diocese who visited our link Diocese of Bungoma during October. After being met by Bishop Eliud the group were dispersed to hosts in various places.

Pam Walden, from St Andrew’s Kettering, said that the women in the group felt privileged to be treated as 'honorary' men. “The men talked to us as men but as we were women, the women of the household also found it very easy to talk to us as well. They took us round their town or village visiting different members of the church.”

Melvyn was there in particular to make contact with schools to find homes for the computers that have been donated from the Peterborough Diocese. “This was more than achieved,” he said and he is now working on the logistics of getting the computers shipped out.

“These people are living the gospel without condition,” said Melvyn. “They have a lot to teach us about living according to what Jesus taught. Our material lives get so much in the way of our faith and our relationship with the Lord Jesus.”
