How to become a Fairtrade parish

Parishes in the Diocese of Peterborough are encouraged to commit themselves to using fairly traded goods. The aim is to have at least two thirds of parishes signed up and to become a Fairtrade diocese.

There are three simple steps to becoming a Fairtrade parish.

  1. The Parochial Church Council passes a resolution to use tea and coffee that carries the Fairtrade mark.
  2. The church commits itself to developing awareness of trade justice through prayer, study and action.
  3. The Parish Pledge Form is completed and returned and a certificate is issued by the diocese.

The Fairtrade mark gives assurance that the producer is given a guarateed price. This can make a live-saving difference to many communities and enables investment in health, housing and education that is not possible with the fluctuations of world prices.

Fairtrade is part of the campaign to bring justice in international trade. It calls for fundamental changes that will work in the interests of the poor rather than existing rules that favour the rich.
