Parish Nursing

Report on Parish Nursing information morning, April 2007 More

General information

Parish Nursing is a newly developing area of nursing practice in the UK. A parish nurse is a registered nurse with community experience, who works through the church, offering spiritual as well as physical and mental care. They will serve the church as well as the local community, with respect for all faiths and none.

Parish Nursing is not a physically invasive practice, rather they offer care that always includes attention to a person’s spiritual understanding of life, care that motivates, care that assists self-management, care that supports lifestyle change, care that promotes safety, care that supports family life, care that promotes healthy communities.

There are presently two parish nurses based in the parishes of Oakham and St Mark’s Wellingborough in the diocese and a further parish nurse based at a Free Church in Brixworth. This is a growing movement that seeks to deliver whole person health care through the local church.
