Opportunities and vocations for young people

Chellington Centre – Coordinator
Great job as Coordinator for the Chellington Residential Youth Centre in St Alban’s Diocese Just South of Rushden
Hard work, joys and challenges, Liz, the current coordinator has done an amazingly good job at getting the ball rolling after reopening and so there is a strong base for someone who is a developer.

Education Sunday – ‘Come and See’ : 20 January
For well over a hundred years there has been an annual recognition of Education Sunday in England and Wales - It is a national day of prayer and celebration for everyone in the world of education. Education Sunday always falls on the 9th Sunday before Easter. Since Easter is very early in 2008, Education Sunday falls on 20th January which is within the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. This coming year could provide a marvellous opportunity for local churches to think together about how they relate to their local schools, and how they support teachers, governors and others involved in education in their congregations.

Room to grow – Building on good practice in rural youth work - 23 January
Wednesday 23rd January, 9.30am – 4.45pm, Novotel Bristol Hotel, Victoria Street, Bristol, BS1 6HY
Youth Matters Next Steps set a series of challenges for all local authorities to design and deliver services to improve outcomes for young people by offering more things to do and places to go, more opportunities to volunteer, better information, advice and guidance and better support. It is recognised that for some young people improved outcomes are even more difficult to achieve; young people in rural areas face very particular barriers.
The conference will provide the opportunity to share good practice from around the country in meeting the challenges of Youth Matters Next Steps and the work that has already begun on establishing Integrated Youth Support Services and Targeted Youth Support. It will also provide a platform to launch the Positive Activities report, produced in partnership with The National Youth Agency, and outlining the key findings of the survey carried out during October and November to identify how development of positive activities in rural areas is progressing.
The objectives of the conference are to consider the challenges and opportunities facing rural youth services, and to highlight and share good practice. There will be involvement from a wide range of agencies delivering or supporting delivery of services for young people in rural areas, including Gloucestershire Youth Service, Connexions, North East Regional Youth Work Unit, The National Youth Agency, the Department for Children, Schools and Families and a group from Finland who will be sharing with conference delegates their good practice in rural youth work in Finland. Reasons to attend: To be informed of current and future developments from the perspective of rural youth services. The chance to share and learn from practice being developed across the country. The opportunity to network and discuss issues with colleagues. A variety of workshops on Youth Matters strands and rural youth work in Finland

Christian Vocations
This is a wonderful organisation which operates as an umbrella for all sorts of vocational opportunities including gap years, short term service and so on. They produce a wide range of materials, and a magazine called Mission Matters, a short term opportunities directory and more. www.christianvocations.org.

Xplore
Xplore is for 18-25 year olds and comes from the Church Army. If you have young people who might be interested in this gap year opportunity, then why not check this out through the link on www.churcharmy.org.uk/ms/xplore/xpl_home.asp

Gap Years - Christian Aid
A range of gap year opportunities for young and not-so-young people. They have a good leaflet for those aged 18-25 of which Paul has numerous copies. www.pressureworks.org/gap.

Gap Years – Careforce
Careforce is a Christian gap year organisation serving here in the UK, who have upward of 75 young Christians from 22 nations serving with churches and projects. www.careforce.co.uk.

South American Missionary Society
A range of short and longer term opportunities to volunteer to go overseas. They have:
• The Latino Experience for 3-4 weeks in July and August.
• Short term volunteers ranging from 6 months to 2 years
• The Latin Volunteer Scheme which is a great way for a British church to experience some Latin enthusiasm and energy by offering a voluntary work placement to a Latin American Christian.

Diocesan Young Vocations Group
Do you have young people who might be interested in joining the Anglican priesthood? We are looking to encourage vocation to the priesthood for those under the age of 30 and if you have young people who might be interested even at earlier stages in their lives, then there are folk who would be happy to talk with them. Perhaps if you, yourself, are in that age range and would be interested, then why not give Paul a ring and he can point you in the right direction. We desperately need young men and women to lead our churches into the next generation.

Young adult observers for General Synod
Every meeting of General Synod has the opportunity for young people to act as observers. If there are people in your church or youth group who might be interested in such an opportunity, then contact Paul. There are two meetings of General Synod each year, one in London and one in York.

Christian Workforce Development Conference
This was held earlier this year to consider the development of those wishing to undertake full time youth work. There is now a wide range of courses and information available. If you are in this position and would like to have a discussion with Paul, he took part in the conference and since has met with a number of individuals considering their vocation so, if you would like more information, then contact him.

Overseas
There are numerous opportunities from a variety of different agencies to travel overseas for both young people and youth workers. If you would like the chance to travel to Egypt or to Israel and the occupied territories to work alongside people as they build houses, lead summer camps or undertake other practical work, then why not contact Bible Lands on their website www.biblelands.org.uk, or if you would like further information or a leaflet, contact Paul.

Bungoma
Our diocesan link is the Diocese of Bungoma on the Kenya/Uganda border. There are loads of opportunities to link your youth group, church, school etc. with a similar organisation within Bungoma for exchange of ideas, information, to be able to resource projects and development overseas and, hopefully, in the not-too-distant future, to be able to allow youth workers and/or young people to actually be able to travel to Bungoma to see for themselves the kinds of activities that are going on. Many folk within the Diocese have met up with visitors we have hosted from Bungoma and, as resources develop over there, there will be the chance for trips. If you are interested, contact Paul.

Student Christian Movement
This exists to support your older students through their time at university and whilst remaining in the parishes. If you would like to put your students in touch with them, then contact www.movement.org.uk
