A recent visit to South Korea by the Rt Revd Andrew Proud, Diocesan Honorary Assistant Bishop and the Revd Canon Byung Jun Kim, has sparked joy and deepened relationships between the Diocese of Peterborough and Anglican dioceses across Korea, strengthening the international partnership built on shared faith, cultural exchange, and mutual encouragement.
This was Bishop Andrew’s first visit to Korea, and he has treasured first impressions. He says:
“I was struck most by the tree-covered mountains, everywhere; the ingenious use of the space between the mountains, where cities, industrial zones and farmed landscapes sat; the fact everything looked so new and clean; the confident buildings and the generous road systems; the delicious, colourful and healthy food; the strong work ethic and, of course how different the spoken and written language are.”

The purpose of the two-week visit was to strengthen ties between the Diocese of Peterborough and the Diocese of Seoul, as well as to formalise partnerships with the dioceses of Daejeon and Busan that had begun during the ministries of Bishop Donald and Bishop John.
The Anglican Church in Korea has long played an active role in supporting society, and today it is entrusted by the government to run a variety of essential services on its behalf. These include well-resourced programmes for people experiencing homelessness, residential care for vulnerable children, and centres providing support for individuals with learning disabilities.
During the visit, a wide range of engagements took place. Meetings were held with bishops, clergy, ordinands, and members of organisations including the Mothers’ Union and the Franciscan sisters in Gumi City.
Amid the busy schedule, there were also moments to experience Korean culture firsthand; from historic palaces and traditional villages, to the modern metro system and even a visit to the observation tower overlooking North Korea. Shared meals, laughter, and informal conversations further strengthened bonds and created friendships.
The visit also offered valuable perspective. While Anglican communities in England and Korea exist in very different contexts, the shared faith between them was described by Bishop Andrew as “tangible and visible.”
Encouraging plans for future collaboration have already emerged. The Diocese of Busan, a smaller diocese, plans to build relationships gradually through regular online meetings. The Diocese of Daejeon is keen to connect through the Mothers’ Union, focusing on supporting young people and praying for global challenges. Meanwhile, the now well-established link with the Diocese of Seoul aims to develop joint mission opportunities with a focus on young people, including potential volunteering projects overseas.
The Sungkonghoe (Anglican) University in Seoul has also expressed interest in academic collaboration, proposing cross-cultural Bible study for ordinands and newly ordained clergy, a retreat for ordinands, and a joint multi-disciplinary seminar on AI.
The visit concluded with a celebration of the centenary of Seoul Cathedral, marked by a special concert and services that brought together worship, music, and community in a powerful finale.
Returning home, there was a shared sense of encouragement and anticipation. Our growing link partnership not only promises to strengthen faith communities on both sides but may also pave the way for broader international connections in the future.
