2026 marks a significant milestone for the Mothers’ Union as they celebrate 150 years since its founding. Established in 1876 by Mary Sumner, a vicar’s wife with a bold vision, the Mothers’ Union was founded on her belief that women, regardless of class or status, could come together in faith to support one another and strengthen family life within the Church.
From that single spark of an idea, a global movement was born – and Mothers’ Union has grown to 4 million members across 84 countries.
Celebrations are taking place throughout the anniversary year at both national and local levels, with branches finding creative ways to mark the occasion while highlighting the charity’s ongoing mission.
Amongst those taking part in the celebrations is Jill Cannings of the Uppingham Mothers’ Union branch, who has become well known for combining fundraising efforts with personal challenges. To mark the organisation’s 140th anniversary in 2016, Jill completed a half marathon and played 140 holes of golf in a single week. Three years later, while serving as Diocesan President, she took part in a 70-kilometre prayer walk through eight deaneries over the course of a week.
This year, Jill returned to her local golf club to honour the Mothers’ Union’s landmark anniversary by aiming to complete 150 holes in a week.
The challenge took place between 1 and 6 June at Greetham Valley Golf Club, where Jill previously served as Ladies Captain. Throughout the week, supporters and fellow golfers were invited to join her on the course or meet her in the clubhouse for refreshments and encouragement.
Jill’s goal was not only to raise funds but also to increase awareness of the Mothers’ Union and the life-changing work it carries out locally, across the Diocese and around the world.
Despite facing changeable weather conditions during the week, Jill successfully completed the challenge, raising more than £800. The funds will help support the Mothers’ Union’s ministry and charitable projects within the Diocese, enabling the organisation to continue serving families and communities through faith-based outreach and support.
The achievement stands as a fitting tribute to the Mothers’ Union’s 150 years of service and reflects the dedication of volunteers who continue Mary Sumner’s vision of faith, fellowship and practical care for others.
