More than 60 volunteers and ministry workers from across the Diocese were given a special opportunity to rest, recharge and be celebrated during a series of overnight retreats at Launde Abbey as part of RECOGNISE 2026.
Organised by the Diocesan Children, Youth and Families (CYPF) team and funded through a nationally funded project, the three retreats brought together an inspiring mix of people who faithfully serve children, young people and families in their local communities. Among those attending were toddler group helpers, Sunday school leaders, family ministers, school chaplains and full-time youth workers—each of whom play a vital role in sharing God's love with the next generation.
Set in the peaceful surroundings of Launde Abbey, the retreats offered a welcome pause from the demands of this crucial ministry. Participants enjoyed shared meals, walks around the beautiful grounds, times of prayer and worship in the chapel, board games, laughter and friendship. Just as importantly, they were given space to be still, reflect and listen to God.

The message behind the retreats was simple yet powerful: to remind those who serve that they are seen, valued and appreciated. Many volunteers and workers give countless hours behind the scenes, often balancing ministry commitments alongside work, family life and other responsibilities. The retreats provided a tangible expression of gratitude, offering time for rest, encouragement and spiritual renewal.

Seeing those genuine connections form and watching people realise they are part of a much bigger story across the Diocese, has been deeply encouraging and incredibly inspiring.”
Recognise week, held from 6–12 July as part of the Church of England’s 30k Project, shines a spotlight on the people whose dedication helps children, young people and families encounter faith and belonging. The Launde Abbey retreats brought that vision to life, demonstrating that recognition is about more than words; it is about creating space for hospitality, community, care and renewal.
As participants returned to their churches, schools and ministries, they did so refreshed and encouraged, carrying with them a renewed sense of purpose and the knowledge that their faithful service is making a lasting difference in the lives of children, young people and families across the Diocese.
