Headteachers' Conference: Excellence in education from a holistic perspective - body, mind and spirit

We will be exploring together the theme of ‘Excellence in education from a holistic perspective - body, mind and spirit’.

There will be a significant presentation from three of our own Headteachers – Tracey Cunningham, Fiona Wilce and Nicola Fountain, who all achieved an ‘excellent’ outcome recently when inspected under the new SIAMS inspection schedule.  Our very own Liz Youngman, who leads on all aspects of SIAMS in our Diocese, will also contribute further insights into achieving excellence in SIAMS terms.

Dame Alice Hudson, Executive Headteacher of the Twyford Church of England Academies Trust, will be with us.  The Trust is arguably the most successful Church of England secondary school MAT in London, with all the schools consistently receiving ‘outstanding’ Ofsted and SIAMS inspections.  Alice will be sharing with us her leadership experience of consistently achieving standards of excellence across a group of Church of England Schools, from her perspective as an Executive Headteacher.

Mary Hawes, the Church of England’s national adviser on children’s and young people’s spirituality, will also be joining us.  Mary originally trained as a teacher, and is currently the Church of England’s National Children and Youth Adviser, a post she has held for 13 years. Prior to that, she was the Children’s Adviser in the Diocese of London, Education Officer at Rochester Cathedral and an editor with Scripture Union.  She was ordained in 2000 and serves as Assistant Priest in the parish of St Mary with St Alban, Tedding ton, where she is also Chair of Governors at the local Church Primary School.

Julie Sadler, Principal of St Andrew’s College, twice judged ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted and the accredited provider of the Mental Health Quality Mark, will be talking to us about identifying pupils’ mental health needs, supporting them effectively in school and signposting them to the most appropriate specialist services.

There will be a presentation about developing pupils’ physical health and fitness, and all the benefits this brings to children and young people’s wellbeing, including Ian Lancaster from Christians in Sport and Ben Lawrence from Northampton Rugby Football Club.

Also, Dan Finn, Chief Executive of the Archbishop of York’s Young Leaders Award, will be sharing more about the Young Leaders curriculum, with the physical, mental and spiritual challenges it brings, in conversation with a headteacher and CofEPQH Course Leader, Jackii Crockett, and a group of pupils from St botolph's CE Primary School, who have successfully completed the Young Leaders Award.
