Looking with Fresh Eyes

Speakers: Members of the Cathedral Community

Our churches are often full of windows, paintings, and other items reflecting both the richness of our Christian tradition and the history of our faith. How can we best use these treasures to engage with our communities?

Join members of the cathedral community on a day exploring the treasures of Peterborough Cathedral, with discussions and best practice tips for our own church buildings. There will also be an opportunity for a special 'behind the scenes' tour of the cathedral - please wear sturdy shoes!

About Peterborough Cathedral: The cathedral is one of the few 12th century buildings to have remained largely intact. The building has many important architectural features and is also the burial place for Catherine of Aragon.

Headteachers' Conference: Overcoming Disadvantage

We will be exploring together the theme of ‘Overcoming Disadvantage’.

Bishop Stephen Cottrell, Bishop of Chelmsford, will give a keynote address on the opportunities for overcoming disadvantage through an education for life which is deeply Christian and serves the common good.

Jez Gowers-Cromie from Christian Aid will explain how their Global Neighbours scheme seeks to encourage a deeper understanding of global injustice and a Christian response to it from school pupils.

Andy Lakatos, Ofsted Lead Inspector and School Effectiveness Adviser for the Diocesan Board of Education, will explain Ofsted’s expectations for helping disadvantaged pupils succeed in their education, with illustrations of best practice in relation to improvement planning and whole school leadership.

Matt Ward from the Leicestershire Teaching School and Mead Educational Trust will give a very practical presentation about helping Pupil Premium pupils overcome disadvantage and achieve well in the classroom.

Tatiana Wilson, Education Adviser for Vulnerable Pupils in Exeter Diocese, who recently worked with the Children’s Society and the Church of England Education Office to publish ‘Mental Health and Wellbeing: Towards a Whole School Approach’, will share insights from this and other projects, together with strategies to support school communities to enable all to live life to the full.

Dr Helena Lewis-Smith, a research psychologist at the Centre for Appearance Research, West of England University, will explore the nature and prevalence of body image concerns, and explain strategies and interventions which can be used to promote positive body image among children and young people.

Understanding Christianity Day 3

The resource called Understanding Christianity: Text Impact Connections, offers an approach to teaching and learning about Christianity with units of work and supporting resources from EYFS to Year 9. It was launched at Lambeth Palace on 26th May 2016 and has been extremely well received since then with over 95% of Diocesan schools having completed the training.

Understanding Christianity sets the bar for the quality of teaching and learning about Christianity in our schools and academies. It reinforces the messages we have been giving over the last few years about ‘digging deeper’ and engaging children and young people with the big ideas and concepts of the Christian faith. The teaching approach is one of theological enquiry, and the units of work support both continuity and progression.

The Resources

The original resources issued to schools who trained between 2016 and 2019 are no longer available due to production costs.  Instead a new more slimmed down resource pack will be available and, once trained, the full resources will be available online.

Understanding Christianity takes place over 3 days. On Day One the RE Subject Leaders will receive the resources to support implementation. Following this, participants must attend a Day Two and Day Three Encounter day - non attendance will result in a charge being made.  It is not possible to attend Days Two and Three without attendance on Day One. All sessions will take place at the Diocese of Peterborough Education Office, Bouverie Court, Bedford Road, Northampton, NN4 7YD.

Day 1 will be held on Tuesday 12 November 2019 from 9.30am – 3.30pm

Day 2 will be held on Tuesday 14 January 2020 from 9.30am – 3.30pm

Day 3 will be held on Tuesday 24 March 2020 from 9.30am – 3.30pm

The Diocesan Education Offices, Bouverie Court, Unit 1, 6 The Lakes, Bedford Road, Northampton NN4 7YD
