Launde Abbey Advent Quiet Day

Is Advent Really Necessary? led by Revd Canon Michael Covington

Advent is the four weeks anticipating Christmas Day, but Christmas is often anticipated with Carol Services and Christmas Dinners.

We wouldn’t dream of singing an Easter Hymn in Holy Week, would we?

So, is Advent really necessary?

We’ll be reflecting on that question by exploring Advent and its rich imagery – The Four Last Things, The Coming, the hymns – while trying not to lose the wonderful atmosphere that builds to a climax on Christmas Day!

Understanding Christianity Day 3 (Option 1)

A set of new resources called Understanding Christianity: Text Impact Connections, offers an approach to teaching and learning about Christianity with units of work and supporting resources from EYFS to Year 9.  It was launched at Lambeth Palace on 26th May 2016.

Understanding Christianity will set the bar for the quality of teaching and learning about Christianity in our schools and academies.  It reinforces the messages we have been giving over the last few years about 'digging deeper' and engaging children and young people with the big ideas and concepts of the Christian faith. The teaching approach is one of theological enquiry, and the units of work support both continuity and progression.

The Resources

These include a handbook and units of work as well as a copy of the "Picturing Christianity" pack and a wall frieze showing the "Big Story" of the Bible.  The resources will only be available to teachers who attend the training package.  This has been stipulated by RE Today to ensure effective implementation.

Understanding Christianity takes places over 3 days.  On day one the RE Subject Leaders will receive the resources to support implementation. Following this, participants must attend a Day Two and Day Three Encounter day.  It is not possible to attend days two and three without attendance on day one.  All sessions will take place at the Diocese of Peterborough Education Office, Bouverie Court, Bedford Road, Northampton NN4 7YD from 9.30am - 3.30pm.

Day 1 will be held on Thursday 29 June 2017 (Option 1) OR Thursday 12 October 2017 (option 2)

Day 2 will be held on Tuesday 26 September 2017 (Option 1) OR Monday 15 January 2018 (Option 2)

Middle Leaders Training Programme Day 1

The impact of middle leadership on teaching, learning and assessment is crucial for any school or academy in the drive to be judged as good and outstanding.

This two part programme will enable middle leaders (core subjects, foundation subjects, phase leaders, EYFS leaders) to develop their leadership skills by working with colleagues from across the Diocese a well as within their own school/academy.  The understanding of their role and responsibilities will be developed starting with a detailed look at the Ofsted framework.  This will enable each participant to have a better understanding about gathering a range of evidence so that they have an accurate and comprehensive understanding of the quality of education in their subject/phase.  This will lead to developing an improvement plan which is robust and sharply focused on success criteria based on evaluative evidence gathered throughout the programme.

How can churches be healing communities? Drawing upon what we can learn from medical practitioners, theologians, and science, we will explore how to engage and work with the diverse ways in which healing happens. The Church has many theological and practical resources we can draw upon in order to

Understanding Christianity Day 3 (Option 2)

Day 3 will be held on Monday 4 December 2017 (Option 1) OR Thursday 26 April 2018 (Option 2)
