Launde Abbey Learn Day

Praying with Thomas Aquinas Led by Chris Webb

Just before his death, Thomas Aquinas had a profound mystical experience of God which led him to claim: “Everything I have written is straw”. Nevertheless, generations since have found his thinking about prayer, spiritual formation and the contemplative life to be inspiring and of great practical help. During this day we’ll talk about the rich Dominican spirituality of this greatest of medieval thinkers, and discover how his understanding of habit and virtue, of contemplation and action, of spirit and sacraments can help shape out prayer and practices today.

Managing Significant Building Projects in Places of Worship

The Historic Religious Buildings Alliance is running a training day which covers the management of all stages of a building project in a place of worship, from start up through to making sure benefits are achieved over the long term.

Presentations will include developing your vision, engaging with the wider community, fundraising, working with your architect and managing works once on site. We will also be hearing from three case studies that will tell us how it ‘really was’ and reflecting on lessons learned. There will be a session from the Heritage Lottery Fund as well as lunchtime surgeries where individual cases can be discussed.

Anyone thinking about or starting to plan a major building project for their place of worship will find it invaluable.

There is a fee of £50 to attend the day, but discounts for multiple ticket purchases are available. If you would like further information please contact, Becky Payne on hrb@theheritagealliance.org.uk

And a bit of background explaining who would most benefit from the day:

The day will help you manage all stages of a building project in a place of worship, from start up through to making sure you achieve the benefits over the long term. It is aimed at those concerned with places of worship of all sizes, types and location, and will be relevant both to new build, alterations and repairs. Although focusing on projects of a significant size, many of the principles apply in simplified form to smaller projects, and the day should be useful whatever the size of project being considered. It will be useful both to those who are directly responsible for a single project in a single building, and those who have an oversight role for a number of religious buildings.

The day assumes you already know what you want to do, and takes you forward from there, including setting up a project team, fund raising, obtaining relevant permissions, managing building professionals, keeping everyone engaged, and ensuring the project brings the desired benefits over the longer term. The speakers have hands on experience of building projects in places of worship. The day will be practical and detailed, equipping you to make a better job of managing your building project. The event is organised by the Historic Religious Buildings Alliance, with significant financial support from Purcell

Understanding Christianity Day 2 (Option 2)

A set of new resources called Understanding Christianity: Text Impact Connections, offers an approach to teaching and learning about Christianity with units of work and supporting resources from EYFS to Year 9.  It was launched at Lambeth Palace on 26th May 2016.

Understanding Christianity will set the bar for the quality of teaching and learning about Christianity in our schools and academies.  It reinforces the messages we have been giving over the last few years about 'digging deeper' and engaging children and young people with the big ideas and concepts of the Christian faith. The teaching approach is one of theological enquiry, and the units of work support both continuity and progression.

The Resources

These include a handbook and units of work as well as a copy of the "Picturing Christianity" pack and a wall frieze showing the "Big Story" of the Bible.  The resources will only be available to teachers who attend the training package.  This has been stipulated by RE Today to ensure effective implementation.

Understanding Christianity takes places over 3 days.  On day one the RE Subject Leaders will receive the resources to support implementation. Following this, participants must attend a Day Two and Day Three Encounter day.  It is not possible to attend days two and three without attendance on day one.  All sessions will take place at the Diocese of Peterborough Education Office, Bouverie Court, Bedford Road, Northampton NN4 7YD from 9.30am - 3.30pm.

Day 1 will be held on Thursday 29 June 2017 (Option 1) OR Thursday 12 October 2017 (Option 2)

Day 2 will be held on Tuesday 26 September 2017 (Option 1) OR Monday 15 January 2018 (Option 2)

Day 3 will be held on Monday 4 December 2017 (Option 1) OR Thursday 26 April 2018 (Option 2)
