Bishop’s Roadshows 2017

Following on from the very popular series of Roadshows in 2014, Bishop Donald would like to invite you the 2017 Roadshows.

Bishop Donald said:
“I believe that God cares passionately about his church and that he wants it to be alive and joyful; to grow and flourish. The purpose of the Roadshows is to share with the whole diocese this vision for God’s church in order to encourage and invigorate the parishes throughout the diocese.

During these Roadshows I will be talking about many aspects of what it means to be alive to God as Anglicans in this part of the world. We will be considering the training and cost of ministry - both lay and ordained. We will be thinking about the place of schools in our parishes and other ways of how we can support your parishes to thrive and grow.

I very much hope that clergy, licensed lay ministers, churchwardens, and PCC treasurers, will come to these Roadshows, but the invitation is open to all PCC members, and indeed to all churchgoers. Please spread the word as widely as possible, and come join me one Saturday morning.

Please contact Suzanne.carter@peterborough-diocese.org.uk to choose an event date and to give numbers of those attending.

Church Building Projects: Purpose, Planning, Procurement

This brand new workshop is produced by the National Stewardship & Resources Team and is for churchwardens, PCC members, Treasurers, Building Committee Members, Project Managers and others involved in starting a building project in your church or church hall.

In a process which involves a lot of money, a lot of time and some changes to your church building, avoiding some of the common pitfalls is not just a question of using your common sense.

Attending this workshop will help you to benefit from the collective wisdom of experts and of people who have been involved in successful projects in the past. By focussing on the main questions, it will help you to find and work with professionals effectively to achieve your church’s goals.

We will focus on six big questions:

  • How do you get project scope right and to budget?
  • What organisations do you need to involve and how do you work with them effectively?
  • How do you organise and how do you find the right professionals?
  • The practical processes and things to avoid – what are they?
  • What must you do, and what ought you to do?
  • Raising the money – how do you budget it and how not to waste it?

This day is free of charge. Numbers are limited to 25 people and bookings need to be made in advance.

Roles and Responsibilities of Church School Governors

This two hour training session will cover:

  • The role of the Church School and Academy– what does it mean to be “distinctive” and “inclusive”?
  • The responsibilities of a Foundation Governor and governors in general—ensuring compliance with the school’s Trust Deed; care for the school site and buildings and helping to develop the school’s Christian character;
  • differences between VA and VC schools, and Academies.
  • Denominational Inspections—what will the inspector be looking for and how can Governors help to prepare for their visit?
  • Responding to tricky situations – discussion of several commonly-occurring scenarios.

Who the module is for ?

The governing body has a key role to play in the management and support of the church school and to enable this, it will need a full complement of Foundation governors who are tasked specifically to uphold the values within the Trust deed, and also to bring the prayerful support of the community into the school.

Whilst there are some aspects that are specific to Foundation Governors, the session will be of interest to all governors in Church of England Schools.

Launde Abbey Learn Day

Desert Mothers Led by Cathy Davies

The lives and sayings of The Desert Fathers from the 4th and 5th Century are well recorded but over recent decades light has been shed on the Desert Mothers or Ammas who also went into the desert to learn to love and wait on God in stillness, silence and solitude.

We’ll be exploring the extraordinary lives, saying and practices of Desert Mothers whose wisdom and guidance was sought by many in the desert and whose voices still speak with relevance and wisdom into our own similarly frenetic times.  We will also be spending time with the lives of more contemporary Desert Mothers to explore their perspective and what they can teach us.

Understanding Christianity

A set of new resources called Understanding Christianity: Text Impact Connections, offers an approach to teaching and learning about Christianity with units of work and supporting resources from EYFS to Year 9.  It was launched at Lambeth Palace on 26th May 2016.

Understanding Christianity will set the bar for the quality of teaching and learning about Christianity in our schools and academies.  It reinforces the messages we have been giving over the last few years about 'digging deeper' and engaging children and young people with the big ideas and concepts of the Christian faith. The teaching approach is one of theological enquiry, and the units of work support both continuity and progression.

The Resources

These include a handbook and units of work as well as a copy of the "Picturing Christianity" pack and a wall frieze showing the "Big Story" of the Bible.  The resources will only be available to teachers who attend the training package.  This has been stipulated by RE Today to ensure effective implementation.

Understanding Christianity takes places over 3 days.  On day one the RE Subject Leaders will receive the resources to support implementation. Following this, participants must attend a Day Two and Day Three Encounter day.  It is not possible to attend days two and three without attendance on day one.  All sessions will take place at the Diocese of Peterborough Education Office, Bouverie Court, Bedford Road, Northampton NN4 7YD from 9.30am - 3.30pm.

Day 1 will be held on Thursday 29 June 2017

Day 2 will be held on Tuesday 26 September 2017

Day 3 will be held on Monday 4 December 2017
