Cathedral launches Unofficial Galaxies Exhibition

Unofficial Galaxies, one of the largest Star Wars fan private collections in the world, will be on show at Peterborough Cathedral this summer.

About the Exhibition

Unofficial Galaxies is rarely seen in the UK and among the most exciting exhibits in the 120+ piece collection are a full-size Landspeeder purchased from London’s Elstree Studios, and the desk and chair of young Anakin Skywalker from the 1999 film The Phantom Menace.

Also on display will be an array of original production items, as well as costumes for characters such as Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Darth Vader and many more. Much prized Star Wars toys dating from 1977 to 1999 will also be on show.

Visiting in costume will be positively encouraged!

There will be a number of quiet sessions available for those with additional needs. During these sessions the music will be turned off and the lighting adjusted.

23 July                City Praise: “To eternity and beyond”

An evening of contemporary praise and worship celebrating the Christian hope of heaven
Revd Canon Steve Benoy & the City Praise band

30 July                Talk: ‘Bigger on the Inside’ with Revds Chrys Tremththanmor and Bev Hollins

How does science fiction makes us think beyond our own small worlds? Using examples from popular TV fiction programmes and movies, Chrys and Bev will explore how science fiction inspires us to appreciate a bigger universe. Chrys Tremththanmor is the Clergy Training Officer for Peterborough Diocese and Associate Priest at St Alban's, Northampton. In her spare time, she writes fantasy novels, travels widely, and tries to outwit her parrot. Beverley Hollins is Rector of St Peter's, Weston Favell, and unwinds with Star Trek, The Orville or other sci-fi shows. She is currently harvesting rose petals in large numbers to make confetti for her daughter's wedding.

6th August              Galaxies: Big Question

An evening of lively panel discussion and audience debate on a whole-range of topics inspired by the themes raised by science fiction.

13th August          Alternative Worship: I am your Father led by Revd Canon Dr Rowan Williams

Alternaive worship looking at themes of identity, power and potential.

In the famous scene where Luke Skywalker discovers his true parentage, Darth Vader tells Luke ‘With our combined strength, we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy’. What resonances are there between this part of the Star Wars narrative and the Biblical story of salvation? How does Jesus come to terms with his identity? Does he have to learn to use his power?  How do we understand the fatherhood of God?

20th August          Talk: This is the Way with Revd Dr Stuart Mousir-Harrison

What insights into Christian understandings of human nature, identity & purpose does the universe of Star Wars offer, and how have these changed in popular culture over the decades? Join Stuart as he ruminates on themes that guide both our lives & faith and those of the inhabitants of George Lucas’ influential creation.
Stuart Mousir-Harrison is the University Chaplain at the University of Northampton. A long-standing science fiction and fantasy Role-Playing Gamer, he acts as Chaplain to part of the UK RPG community and regularly leads seminars on Spirituality & Role-Playing Games.
