Mark Yaconelli - "From Anxiety to Love"

A contemplative approach to youth ministry

“Teenagers make adults anxious. Adults make teenagers anxious. God makes everyone anxious. Maybe that’s why youth ministry suffers such high amounts of burnout?

Based on ten years of research in the Youth Ministry and Spirituality Project (and Mark’s book Contemplative Youth Ministry), this workshop engages participants in creative exercises, contemplative practices, teaching sessions, discussion, and tested strategies to help churches, parents, and youth workers develop ministries that transition from anxiety to love, isolation to community, passivity to compassionate action.”

During the day… We are gathering Church and Youth Leaders together for a day of deep teaching and application by one of the leading thinkers in Youth Ministry on the planet.

In the evening… We are inviting all volunteers and leaders to join us for a refreshing evening of storytelling, inspiration and worship. Bring your teams!

Understanding Christianity Day 1

A set of resources called Understanding Christianity: Text Impact Connections, offers an approach to teaching and learning about Christianity with units of work and supporting resources from EYFS to Year 9. It was launched at Lambeth Palace on 26th May 2016 and has been extremely well received since then with over 95% of Diocesan schools completing the training.

Understanding Christianity sets the bar for the quality of teaching and learning about Christianity in our schools and academies. It reinforces the messages we have been giving over the last few years about ‘digging deeper’ and engaging children and young people with the big ideas and concepts of the Christian faith. The teaching approach is one of theological enquiry, and the units of work support both continuity and progression.

The Resources

These include a handbook and units of work as well as a copy of the “Picturing Christianity” pack and a wall frieze showing the “Big Story” of the Bible. The resources will only be available to teachers who attend the training package. This has been stipulated by RE Today to ensure effective implementation.

Understanding Christianity takes place over 3 days. On day one the RE Subject Leaders will receive the resources to support implementation. Following this, participants must attend a Day Two and Day Three Encounter day.  It is not possible to attend days two and three without attendance on Day One. All sessions will take place at the Diocese of Peterborough Education Office, Bouverie Court, Bedford Road, Northampton, NN4 7YD.

Day 1 will be held on Wednesday 3 October 2018 from 9.30am – 3.30pm

Day 2 will be held on Monday 14 January 2019 from 9.30am – 3.30pm

Day 3 will be held on Thursday 2 May 2019 from 9.30am – 3.30pm

Supporting People with Mental Health Issues

How can we support people we come across with mental health issues? Using a mixture of presentation, discussion, and small group work, we will consider our own response of these situations, when a specialist might be helpful, some of the differences between mental health care and the role of clergy/pastoral workers, and our own needs when providing effective pastoral care.

Dr Rachel Freeth is a NHS psychiatrist and a counsellor. She devises and delivers training on subjects related to psychiatry and mental health. Her website is www.rachelfreeth.com

Come and See

During this day, we will be exploring the invitation held out to us in the Gospel to ‘Come and see’.

What does it mean to each of us to hear and respond to those words - not just once, but to constantly engage with looking further, looking more deeply and being willing to turn aside from our preoccupations in order to pay attention to God?

The day will include time to reflect on our own experiences of God, some reflections from Sr Rachel, as well as time to be alone and quiet.

Open to all, and for those who have no previous experience of quiet days and silence, guidance will be given as how to spend times of quiet.

Please bring a packed lunch. Reserve a place here or for more information please contact Sr Rachel Overton sister.rco@icloud.com

Let it be to me according to your Word

In the season of Advent, we will be reflecting upon Mary the Mother of Jesus.
Often held out as a model of obedience, what might she have to show us about relating to God?

The day will include time to reflect on our own experiences of God, some reflections from Sr Rachel, as well as time to be alone and quiet in the run up to Christmas.

Open to all, and for those who have no previous experience of quiet days and silence, guidance will be given as how to spend times of quiet.

Please bring a packed lunch. Reserve a place here or for more information please contact Sr Rachel Overton sister.rco@icloud.com

Understanding Christianity Day 2

A set of resources called Understanding Christianity: Text Impact Connections, offers an approach to teaching and learning about Christianity with units of work and supporting resources from EYFS to Year 9. It was launched at Lambeth Palace on 26th May 2016 and has been extremely well received since then with over 95% of Diocesan schools having completed the training.

Promoting Religious Literacy through Balanced RE

This day course will explore what is meant by religious literacy and
the impact of this on creating a balanced curriculum and effective
pedagogy for Religious Education.

A range of practical strategies to help equip children to hold
balanced and well-informed conversations about religion and belief
will be shared. We will examine how understanding beliefs,
developing philosophical thinking and exploring the lived reality of
religion supports pupils in becoming critically aware, free-thinking
and compassionate adults.

About our trainer:
Kathryn Wright is an independent RE Adviser
working primarily for the Diocese of Norwich and
Culham St Gabriel’s Trust. She recently completed a
PhD researching the purpose of RE and pedagogical
approaches to the subject in Church of England
schools. She is a qualified SIAMS inspector and
assesses schools for the RE Quality Mark. She is a co
-opted member of the NATRE executive and has
recently become a member of the Religious
Education Council Board.

Online-Safety for Today's World

Online-Safety is a huge subject area .This 1-day course will cover a wide
scope of information. We will focus on:

*  A full update – keeping to the aspects of content, contact and conduct
and considering the main activities of children such as gaming, YouTube and
social media, you will be brought right up to date of the risks, issues and the
opportunities of the online lives of children. We will also cover emerging
issues in order that staff are brought right up to date.
*  Whole school approach – given the enormity, 1 or 2 people in school
cannot hope to cover everything when you consider governance,
curriculum, safeguarding, parental engagement etc. We will look at how a
whole school approach can help with this and devolve responsibilities over
a range of persons.
*  Parental engagement – arguably the most important and yet also a
frustration for many schools. Why is parental engagement around online
safety so difficult and what can we do that will increase that engagement?
*  Curriculum – many free resources that can help in the curriculum are
years out of date with negligible evidence of impact. What are the latest
good, up to date and free resources that you can use in the classroom that
will have a positive impact on behaviour and risk?

Our Trainer:
Alan Mackenzie is an independent Online-Safety consultant who has
specialised in the area of Online-Safety for over 11 years within education.
Speaking at hundreds of schools and conferences every year, Alan is
passionate about the positive and appropriate use of technology and the
huge benefits that can be realised through global connectivity and
collaboration; he believes that good digital skills are vital in order to help
children and young people embrace the wonderful opportunities whilst
mitigating the risks. This means not teaching with fear and scary stories, but
realistic advice, guidance and non-judgemental support.
