The Theological History of the Civil War

Speaker: Bishop Donald Allister

Where did the divine right of kings come from? Why did Charles try to impose episcopacy on the Scots? Did Laud cause the Civil War? Why was the Act of Uniformity so strict? And what can we learn from all of this?

The talk will be at St Bartholomew’s, Greens Norton (near Towcester) before going on to a buffet lunch at The Butcher’s Arms for lunch (£9.00 per person to include a hot drink). We will then go on to Canons Ashby. Entrance is free for card carrying National Trust members. Entry will cost £8.50 for non-members.

NOTE: Sometimes the house is shut in November for conservation reasons. If so, our visit will be to the church and the gardens.

About Canons Ashby
: The house was home to the Dryden family, who during the Civil War were Puritans and supported Parliament. A fight between Parlimentarian and Royalist soldiers took place on the grounds and the nearby church. The only casualty was the shepherd boy who had kept watch, and a statue honouring his sacrifice stands in the gardens.

Headteachers' Conference: Excellence in education from a holistic perspective - body, mind and spirit

We will be exploring together the theme of ‘Excellence in education from a holistic perspective - body, mind and spirit’.

There will be a significant presentation from three of our own Headteachers – Tracey Cunningham, Fiona Wilce and Nicola Fountain, who all achieved an ‘excellent’ outcome recently when inspected under the new SIAMS inspection schedule.  Our very own Liz Youngman, who leads on all aspects of SIAMS in our Diocese, will also contribute further insights into achieving excellence in SIAMS terms.

Dame Alice Hudson, Executive Headteacher of the Twyford Church of England Academies Trust, will be with us.  The Trust is arguably the most successful Church of England secondary school MAT in London, with all the schools consistently receiving ‘outstanding’ Ofsted and SIAMS inspections.  Alice will be sharing with us her leadership experience of consistently achieving standards of excellence across a group of Church of England Schools, from her perspective as an Executive Headteacher.

Mary Hawes, the Church of England’s national adviser on children’s and young people’s spirituality, will also be joining us.  Mary originally trained as a teacher, and is currently the Church of England’s National Children and Youth Adviser, a post she has held for 13 years. Prior to that, she was the Children’s Adviser in the Diocese of London, Education Officer at Rochester Cathedral and an editor with Scripture Union.  She was ordained in 2000 and serves as Assistant Priest in the parish of St Mary with St Alban, Tedding ton, where she is also Chair of Governors at the local Church Primary School.

Julie Sadler, Principal of St Andrew’s College, twice judged ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted and the accredited provider of the Mental Health Quality Mark, will be talking to us about identifying pupils’ mental health needs, supporting them effectively in school and signposting them to the most appropriate specialist services.

There will be a presentation about developing pupils’ physical health and fitness, and all the benefits this brings to children and young people’s wellbeing, including Ian Lancaster from Christians in Sport and Ben Lawrence from Northampton Rugby Football Club.

Also, Dan Finn, Chief Executive of the Archbishop of York’s Young Leaders Award, will be sharing more about the Young Leaders curriculum, with the physical, mental and spiritual challenges it brings, in conversation with a headteacher and CofEPQH Course Leader, Jackii Crockett, and a group of pupils from St botolph's CE Primary School, who have successfully completed the Young Leaders Award.

Understanding Christianity Day 2

The resource called Understanding Christianity: Text Impact Connections, offers an approach to teaching and learning about Christianity with units of work and supporting resources from EYFS to Year 9. It was launched at Lambeth Palace on 26th May 2016 and has been extremely well received since then with over 95% of Diocesan schools having completed the training.

Understanding Christianity sets the bar for the quality of teaching and learning about Christianity in our schools and academies. It reinforces the messages we have been giving over the last few years about ‘digging deeper’ and engaging children and young people with the big ideas and concepts of the Christian faith. The teaching approach is one of theological enquiry, and the units of work support both continuity and progression.

The Resources

The original resources issued to schools who trained between 2016 and 2019 are no longer available due to production costs.  Instead a new more slimmed down resource pack will be available and, once trained, the full resources will be available online.

Understanding Christianity takes place over 3 days. On Day One the RE Subject Leaders will receive the resources to support implementation. Following this, participants must attend a Day Two and Day Three Encounter day - non attendance will result in a charge being made.  It is not possible to attend Days Two and Three without attendance on Day One. All sessions will take place at the Diocese of Peterborough Education Office, Bouverie Court, Bedford Road, Northampton, NN4 7YD.

Day 1 will be held on Tuesday 12 November 2019 from 9.30am – 3.30pm

Day 2 will be held on Tuesday 14 January 2020 from 9.30am – 3.30pm

Day 3 will be held on Tuesday 24 March 2020 from 9.30am – 3.30pm

Getting the Best out of People

The really useful guide to management & supervision of volunteers & staff

Speaker: Jason Royce is the Director of Souster Youth and has been learning to manage and supervise others for over 15 years in local authority, church, and charity settings.

Whilst the vital stuff of management is often squeezed out by many competing demands and high workloads of church leadership, doing it well can be transformational. Focussed and efficient supervision sessions with those you do ministry alongside can pay back tenfold the time you put in, helping your church to achieve far more. During this training we’ll also give you clear strategies for having difficult conversations and moving past blockages that often hold back progress when managing others.

We’ll cover: The who, what/how, when, where, and why of supervision; How to have a difficult conversation/manage conflict; Learning from others in the room as we share our experiences.
